What is the best time to visit Rovaniemi?

It all depends on the type of trip you want to do, Lapland is famous for its snowy landscapes and the northern lights. If you are planning to take this type of trip, the best months are from late January to mid-March. There is no longer so much crowding around Christmas and the days are starting to get longer, so you can take advantage of them a little more. Furthermore, the activities do not change, Santa Claus is available 365 days!

On the other hand, if what you want is to be in total contact with nature and see the midnight sun, June and July are the ideal months, and the temperature is much warmer and more pleasant.

Finally, if you want to enjoy incredible landscapes with what the Finns call “Ruska” (the yellow, green and red color that the forests take on in the fall), the ideal months are the end of September, October and November.

What is the best time to see the northern lights?

Although the northern lights are a phenomenon that occurs throughout the year, it is only possible to see them from the end of August until almost the end of April, since during the summer the nights are very clear and do not allow you to see them.

You also have to take into account the clouds, and normally from November to mid-January, there are usually the cloudiest days, which makes it more difficult to enjoy this spectacle.

It is important to find a good place as far away from light pollution as possible, know how to read the indicators of the aurora applications well to know the approximate time they could appear and always carry a camera with a tripod to be able to capture the auroras well, since if They are not strong enough, it can be difficult to see them with our own eyes.

What is the best time to travel with children?

Rovaniemi, known as the official home of Santa Claus, is a magical place where children's dreams come true. There the little ones can meet Santa Claus himself. Therefore, the best time to travel with children is the months of November, December and early January. Although the days are shorter, there are more activities for children that they cannot miss, such as Santa Park, Santa Claus's amusement park, which is only open from mid-November to early January, or Santa Claus's Enchanted Forest, which is also open from mid-November to early January. How to arrive to Rovaniemi

It is very easy to get to the capital of Finnish Lapland, here we leave you several options:

By plane: Rovaniemi Airport is the main entry point to the region. It receives regular flights from the main cities of Finland and also international flights in high season. From the airport, you can take a taxi or use the public transport service to reach the center of Rovaniemi. +info

What accommodation options are there in Rovaniemi?

Rovaniemi has a very versatile variety of accommodation options available, from the cheapest to the most luxurious. The Rovaniemi region is quite large and offers a wide range of accommodation. In the city center there are several hotels, hostels and a hostel. A few kilometers from the center, in the resort of Ounasvaara, there are three hotels and several country houses and airbnbs where you can stay.

Important: Rovaniemi is a highly sought-after destination, especially during the Christmas season or the dates surrounding it (such as the December long weekend). Prices skyrocket and rooms usually sell out within a year. It is important to plan the trip in advance if you do not want to pay a very high price.

How should I dress for the Arctic?

When preparing our trip we must take into account the weather conditions we face in Rovaniemi. The average in winter is usually between -8° and -24°, however it is a region where the temperature can vary greatly from one day to the next. It is possible that we will have temperatures of -2° and in three days they will drop to -30°. That is why we should not underestimate the cold in Lapland and we should be well prepared.

 

Although there is the possibility of renting suits in the city of Rovaniemi, these are ordinary ski suits, so if we are not well prepared underneath we will still be cold.
